DESIGN FOR SPACE

Space making is both, a calculated and intuitive response to an available confined volume, space. It is one of many plausible manifestations of a livable arrangement of objects around us.

Can textiles impact the narration of a space?
Textile materials and sensibility have greatly affected architectural thinking and conceptualization. Thus this interdisciplinary project seeks to develop a textile student’s understanding of the qualities of architectural form and space and the role of textiles in modifying and enriching the experiences of spaces. People and activities are an integral part of spaces. Apart from creating aesthetically appealing design solutions, the project aims to create solutions that can have a larger impact on the activities and people involved in the selected spaces.

The project brief for this course was to design and develop a collection of home furnishings for the VIP guest house NID, Paldi campus, Ahmedabad. The unique heritage architecture of the VIP Guest House, activities throughout the year and the influx of people from diverse backgrounds presented the class with immense possibilities for creating relevant textile solutions.

A real-life context was selected for the holistic study of a space to help develop an understanding of the interrelatedness of the parts to the whole of a space through the process of observation, study, analysis and synthesis. Concepts for textile modifiers of space, and design development of a selected textile element were to be custom-created for the space, enhancing the experience of all the participants and stakeholders involved with the designated space in a utilitarian manner.
